The following are definitions and explanations of police calls and complaints. Terminology is standard in North Carolina.

1. Assist fire department: Police are called to direct traffic, crowd control and set up landing zones at wreck and fire scenes.

2. Assist EMS: Assistance for emergency medical services at accidents scenes, medical calls, and help in loading patients, obtaining information, gaining access to locked rooms and traffic control.

3. Stranded Motorist: Assist drivers who have broken down in traffic and need assistance in getting a tow service or moving their vehicle out of traffic.

4. Well Being Check: Checking on people who may be sick or alone and family is trying to make contact with them. May also include 911 calls made where someone hangs up without giving information on a possible emergency.

5. Service Call-Unlock Car: Assist in unlocking a car that has the key locked inside and is still running or has a child or pet locked inside.

6. Service Call-Funeral Escort: Escorting a long procession through Locust to or from a church, funeral home or cemetery to allow family and friends a safe route and show respect to the deceased.

7. Service Call-Bank Escort: Following a person from a business to a banking location where funds collected are deposited for safety.

8. Service Call-Personal Escort: Escorting someone to a residence when there is the potential for domestic violence and an officer needs to be there to prevent an assault. Some escorts involve standing by while items are removed or children are switched between separate parents having legal custody.

9. False Alarm: Any call where a fire or burglar alarm goes off and the officer or fire department respond and the cause is due to owner error or faulty alarm equipment.

10. Prowler Call: Any call where a person calls with a concern that someone is outside their home but has not seen anyone.

11. Domestic: An argument between two people who live together, are related such as husband and wife, girlfriend and boyfriend or parent and child.

12. Missing Person: Someone, adult or child, that has been missing without explanation or has failed to return or show up at a designated time and place and law enforcement are requested to search for and locate them.

13. City Ordinance Violation: Any violation of city rules, ordinances, codes or zoning requirements. Such as noise ordinance, junk vehicles, parking violations, etc.

14. Suspicious Person/Vehicle: A person or vehicle in an area or sitting at a location where it would appear unusual to the public for them to be there and the possibility of criminal activity exists so that an officer should inquire as to the circumstances.

15. Assist other law enforcement: In some dangerous situations, more than one law enforcement officer will respond to assist other local, county and state law enforcement officers to increase manpower, safety and effective resolution to an event.

16. Animal Complaint: Requests for law enforcement to check on barking dogs, animals that are not being attended to such as animal neglect or cruelty, injuries caused by bites and animals such as cows or horses in the roadway.
